What is a Podiatrist?

Posted by on November 25, 2013 in Announcements | 19 comments

A podiatrist, also called a doctor of podiatric medicine, is a specialist who provides medical diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems, such as bunions, heel pain, spurs, hammertoes, neuromas, ingrown toenails, warts, corns and calluses. A podiatrist also renders care of sprains, fractures, infections, and injuries of the foot, ankle and heel. In addition to undergraduate medical school training, podiatrists also attend graduate school for a doctorate degree in podiatry. Podiatrists are required to take state and national exams, as well as be licensed by the state in which they practice.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, there are an estimated 15,000 practicing podiatrists in the United States. Podiatrists are in demand more than ever today because of a rapidly aging population. In addition, according to the association, foot disorders are among the most widespread and neglected health problems affecting people in this country.

Typically, podiatrists:

  • Consult with patients and other physicians on how to prevent foot problems.
  • Diagnose and treat tumors, ulcers, fractures, skin and nail diseases, and deformities.
  • Perform surgeries to correct or remedy such problems as bunions, claw toes, fractures, hammertoes, infections, ruptured Achilles, and other ligaments and tendons.
  • Prescribe therapies and perform diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound and lab tests.
  • Prescribe or fits patients with inserts called orthotics that correct walking patterns.
  • Treat conditions such as: bone disorders, bunions, corns, calluses, cysts, heel spurs, infections, ingrown nails, and plantar fasciitis.

VIP treatment is their #1 priority for the patients. They take care of patient issues with precision and go extra mile to take time out of their busy schedule to educate patients of their foot issues so the patient can make informed decision with the physician for what’s in the patient’s best interest. 14. Dr. Cao is the best Foot doctor ( PODIATRIST, podiatric SURGEON) I have ever encountered, experienced in my 4 years with my foot-ankle-heel-toes problem. He is one of the top expert in the field. Once he treated you, your pain condition is completely gone. He did not delay the good treatment for patients. He wants your problems to be over, wants your pain gone.
His understanding and expertise in the Medical Foot Care and pain control are exceptional.
You will never be sorry if you see this doctor. He is the best ever in New Jersey. I also saw three others Podiatrists, Foot Doctors! They do not even deserve to be called his “Students”. That is the fact I experience myself and thru these failures, and incompetency of these ” Bad” podiatrist!

  15. It’s not fun having foot and ankle problems. They cause so much pain and can be a huge stumbling block in your day. I’m grateful that we have podiatrists to help people in these kinds of situations.

  17. I appreciate the information on what a podiatrist is. I would imagine that doctors who deal with feet and ankles are some of the most important seeing that we are on our feet all day and one of the most used parts of our bodies. My wife has been having some smaller issues with her foot, I will be sure to share this with her.

  18. I really am glad that podiatrists will consult with patients and help them learn how to avoid foot problems in the future like you said. My son made a dumb mistake during football practice, and now he needs to see a podiatrist to help him fix his ankle. I want the doctor to talk to him about avoiding foot problems in the future, so I will be sure to mention that to whoever we choose to see.

  19. My toe has been hurting a bunch, and I think it might be ingrown toenails. It makes sense that I would want to see a podiatrist for this! It would be nice to not have to deal with this pain anymore.
